Q&A with Charlize

Charlize Theron, 33, was born near Johannesburg and moved to the US in her teens to model and to dance with the Joffrey Ballet. In 1996, she made her film debut, in 2 Days In The Valley, and in 2004 won the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of a serial killer in Monster. Her latest movie, The Burning Plains, is out now. She lives in Los Angeles with the actor Stuart Townsend.

When were you happiest?

I couldn’t answer that. There are so many amazing things – falling in love, winning an Oscar, moving my mom out to America and just having a simple dinner with great friends.

What is your greatest fear?

That I become weak and not brave enough to live the life I want to live.

What is your earliest memory?

Falling into a pool and my mother diving in in her robe to save me. She says I was around two.

Charlize Theron: I stole bread to get my big break

She is such a chameleon, so dramatically able to alter her appearance and demeanour, that Hollywood calls actress Charlize Theron ‘The Shape-shifter’.

But while Kenneth Branagh describes her as ‘a whirlwind of crushing sexual energy’, Theron rarely chooses to reveal this quality either on or off screen.

On it, she usually masks her beauty. She won the Best Actress Oscar in 2003 for her portrayal of fat lesbian Aileen Wuornos – a prostitute and serial killer – in Monster. In 2005, for her role as a mine worker in North Country, she had dull hair and wore sexless overalls.

THERON INSPIRED BY ‘SURVIVOR’ TAYLOR

CHARLIZE THERON has named Hollywood legend DAME ELIZABETH TAYLOR as her greatest inspiration – because the veteran actress is a “survivor”.
The Oscar-winner was delighted to finally meet her idol at a recent dinner party, and found herself even more enamoured with Taylor, 77, after their brief chat.
She says, “I said to her, ‘I just think you’re so incredible and I’m so honoured to meet you because you’re an amazing woman.’
“She turned to me and said, ‘I’m just a survivor, darling.’ I loved that moment because that’s what we’re all trying to do.
“Some of us are blessed with not having a lot of turmoil in our lives, but at the end of the day, our nature is to survive and that’s what we do.”

Charlize Theron unimpressed with Oscar

The 33-year-old actress was awarded the Best Actress Academy Awards in 2004 for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in ‘Monster’ but admits she (has) more pressing things to think about than the accolade.

Asked if she agreed with fellow winner Gwyneth Paltrow who said the award means nothing to her in her day-to-day life, Charlize replied: “Look it doesn’t vacuum, it doesn’t wash the dishes, it doesn’t do stuff like that, but it’s definitely an honour.”

The star recently admitted she finds it hard to believe she is one of the few women to be given the prestigious accolade.

She said: “Every time I see the Oscars on the television I can’t believe it. You realise there have only been 81 actresses who have been given this honour. That’s huge. So I never thought that that would happen and the fact that it happened was really special.”

Theron happy to bare all

Charlize Theron finds it easy to go naked on screen.

The actress found it harder to convey her character’s emotion in new movie ‘The Burning Plain’ – in which she plays a self-abusing, sex addicted mother – than take her clothes off.

She said: “Being naked is one of those things I think people think of in an isolated, compartmentalised way, but sometimes it’s harder to do a scene where you have to bear a raw emotion of pain or vulnerability.

“That kind of nakedness is sometimes much harder than taking your clothes off.”

Oscar winner Charlize, who co-produced ‘The Burning Plain’, also revealed she never thought she would ever step behind the camera on her films.

The 33-year-old star added: “If you’ asked me ten years ago if I would produce, I probably would have said, ‘You’re crazy.’ But it’s become one of those things that the older I’ve gotten and the more I’ve done this, the more I realise I love film making.

“It’s not the idea of playing a role and showing up and just acting and doing my thing, it’s the collaborative aspect of it that I really love.”

Charlize Theron feels fat sometimes too

It doesn’t seem like it would be possible, but apparently Charlize Theron has fat days just like the rest of us. She talked about her bloat-blues in a recent interview with AOLNews:

“Life is just as complicated for me as it is for any other woman out there and I wake up just like ever other woman sometimes and can’t fit into my jeans and feel fat and ugly and have bad days.”

Theron deals with her complicated emotions by remembering how lucky she is to be a successful, leggy, blonde Oscar winner:

I’m incredibly blessed when you put everything in perspective, my life is incredibly blessed and I don’t take any of that for granted.”

THERON LINKS DAD’S DEATH TO HER SUCCESS

CHARLIZE THERON has linked the violent death of her father to her successful acting career – because witnessing tragedy at a young age inspired her to make the most of her life.
Theron was 15 when she saw her mother, Gerda, shoot dead her alcoholic and abusive father, Charles, in self-defence.
The actress, who won a coveted Academy Award in 2004, admits the incident will stay with her for life – but also had a positive affect by giving her the motivation to become successful.
She says, “I don’t know how to say this without sounding strange. But I feel like having this tragedy at such a young age has given me a leg up from other people. Because, man, from 16, I knew the value of life and I knew how quickly it could be taken away. And from that moment on, I made a choice to either swim or to drown, you know?
“(I have) had many painful journeys and heartbreaks since my father died, many of which I draw on for my work.”

Charlize Theron speaks ‘dirty’ Spanish

Charlize Theron only knows “dirty stuff” in Spanish.

The 33-year-old actress’ new movie “The Burning Plain” includes lots of Spanish dialogue, and when Mexican director Guillermo Arriaga realized she couldn’t speak the language he decided to teach her some naughty words.

She told BANG Showbiz: “Of course he taught me some dirty stuff! He had a really good friend with him and I was kind of like this little messenger between them. Guillermo’s friend Adrian would be like, ‘Go to Guillermo and say, blah blah blah.’ I’d be the little person rushing over to Guillermo saying the words really loud, and half the crew understood.”

Theron admits she was “embarrassed” at not being able to converse with Guillermo in his native tongue, especially as she convinced herself she would learn the language before shooting began.

She said: “I’m really embarrassed to say I don’t speak Spanish. I’ve lived in California for eight years and I just think it should be a prerequisite – you should be able to speak Spanish if you live in California.

“I had this fantasy that I would learn Spanish before I shot the movie with him, that he would be really impressed with me, that he could direct me in Spanish. Of course it never happened.”
