Charlize admits: I’m a closet obsessive

She’s a beautiful, successful actress with millions in the bank, an Oscar on the sideboard and an enviable long-term relationship – but there’s still one thing that keeps Charlize Theron awake at night: the fear that her cupboards are messy.

The 34-year-old South African has admitted she has obsessive-compulsive disorder, which makes her irrationally anxious about tidy cabinets.

The actress, who won her Oscar for Monster in 2004, said: ‘I actually have a serious problem – obsessive-compulsive disorder. I don’t do counting or anything like that. I’m good with chaos, I just don’t like it when chaos is hidden.

‘So I have a problem with cabinets being messy and people just shoving things in cabinets and closing the door.

‘I will literally lie in bed and not be able to sleep because I’ll be like, “I think I saw something in that cabinet that just shouldn’t be there.”’

Charlize Theron thwarts snappers

CHARLIZE THERON
went to great lengths to ensure the paparazzi didn’t crash filming for her nude scenes in upcoming movie THE BURNING PLAIN – by shooting at the crack of dawn.

The Oscar winner disrobes for her role in the upcoming drama and is seen smoking a cigarette through an open window in full view of passers-by.

But movie bosses were worried photographers would catch the star naked once they discovered the location of the shoot – so they changed the time of filming to make sure Theron’s scenes were kept secret.

Director Guillermo Arriaga tells New York Post’s gossip column PageSix, ‘We had to shoot the scene at 6am before any of the photographers were up. It was done in such secrecy that it wasn’t even in the script. Only three people, including myself, knew it was going to happen.’

Charlize Theron proud of her 2003 Oscar win

“I’m very proud of that Oscar and I understand what an honour it is because I have so many actors I admire tremendously that have never experienced that,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

The actress had taken home the prize for her role of real-life murderer Aileen Wuornos in ‘Monster’.

The beauty has in fact placed it at a place in her house where people can notice it.

She added: “It’s in my office, right next to a bathroom that lots of people use in the house. People will come up and be like, ”I just walked past an Oscar.” I’ll be like, ”Isn’t that awesome?”

Theron thanks her mom for acting career

Hollywood actress Charlize Theron hit rock bottom when her dreams of becoming a prima ballerina were shattered but it was her mother who encouraged her to try her luck at acting instead.

The South African beauty trained as a ballet dancer in New York City, but a knee injury at 19 left her devastated and ruined any chance she had of turning her passion into a career. Now the star has heaped praise on her mother for helping her out of her slump and launching her Hollywood career, reported imdb.com.

‘I remember at night, crying my eyes out and eating four pints of ice cream because I couldn’t dance anymore, and my mom saying ‘Well, why don’t you try acting?’ Because of that, I’m standing on a red carpet today,’ said the actress.

The actress has gone on to star in a series of hit films and even scooped an Academy Award for her performance in 2003 movie ‘Monster’.

Sex addiction concerns Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron knows “a lot” of sex addicts.

The Burning Plain actress understands the pain and confusion that surround sexual obsessions, and the way they tear families apart.

The 34-year-old star: “I’ve personally met a lot of parents, actually, who’ve lost children because they’re suffering from sex addiction and they tend to split up.

“It’s not that one would consciously cheat, but it really is a moment that’s not about the sex. When you’re addicted to it, things actually happen to your body and to your brain that chemically changes you, and so it is like shooting heroin or having a drink.”

Theron denies ever suffering from an addiction herself, but admits her father battled with various dependencies when she was growing up.

She told Parade.com: “I’ve never been addicted to anything but I’ve met people who are. I’ve been around it. I grew up in a house with addiction.

“I understand that grief and pain that comes from someone having to cope with the guilt of wanting to be numb.”

Theron Acts Because She Can’t Dance

Charlize Theron owes her career to a late-night meltdown with her mom.

The Oscar winner, 34, whose romantic drama Burning Plain is in theaters now, opens up during her Quintessentially-sponsored NYC premiere.

What has been the defining moment of her life so far?

“I’ve had a few, I have to say,” the South African-born stunner tells me. “I remember at night, at like 2 in the morning, with my mom in the City in a basement on, like, 21st Street, crying my eyes out and eating four pints of ice cream because I couldn’t dance anymore, and my mom saying ‘well, why don’t you try acting?’ I mean … because of some crazy moment at 2 a.m. with Haagen-Dazs, I’m standing on a red carpet today.”

What does she hope to accomplish by the time she’s 40?

“Just to survive,” she laughs. “I’m not a big planner. I try to live every day like tomorrow might not come. Not that I succeed at that every day, but I try to think that way and not too far ahead.”

Charlize is not afraid to shill.

“I’m butt-naked in the movie,” she says. “I don’t care, as long as I get them into the theater. It’s for the [high-end accent] art.”

Charlize Theron thrown out of America while filming Devil’s Advocate

The South African-born actress became an American citizen in 2007 but initially outstayed her welcome in the States when she was struggling to find work after her breakthrough role in Two Days In The Valley.

As her work visa expired, Theron was still fighting for roles in Hollywood – and had just landed a role opposite Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves in 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate when immigration officials caught up with her.

She explains, ‘I had to hold out for two years after playing the femme fatale in Two Days In The Valley because people wanted me to play that role. I think there was a conscious effort on my part to hold back and I didn’t work for two years and I waited and really fought for roles in The Devil’s Advocate and The Yards, Cider House Rules.

‘I went out on auditions and flew myself out (for movies) and almost went to prison and didn’t wash my hair to break this idea of what people thought of me. I was deported when I was making Devil’s Advocate, but that will be for my book one day.’

MODEST ACTRESS CHARLIZE THERON

Charlize Theron is not “an exhibitionist”.

The ‘Burning Plain’ actress – who appears naked in the first scene of the movie, and has also stripped off in ‘Monster’ and ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ – insists she only flashes flesh on film if it is integral to the storyline.

She explained: “I’m not some exhibitionist. I think people think I just love walking around naked.

“When you start making it about yourself, you stand in the way of doing your job. I have to sit in an editing room with the director and a bunch of execs, and if I had to sit there and think about myself and these men watching me, I think that would make me insecure. I’m just like every other girl out there. I would cringe.”

The 34-year-old actress added making ‘The Burning Plain’ – in which she stars as Sylvia, a woman who found out her mother was having an affair when she was a teenager – made her think about her own upbringing.

Charlize’s parents had a turbulent relationship, culminating in her father being shot dead by her mother after he attacked her when Charlize was 15.

She told the USA Today newspaper: “I looked at my parents and I was so judgmental, and you don’t understand the struggles of what it is to be in a marriage and be committed and raise children and to be part of a family.

“Their marriage wasn’t great. As a child, you see things very differently, and then I got older and I went, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ You start going out with a couple of boys, and some of them aren’t so nice. There’s a lot more that plays into this whole relationship thing than you think.”
